Lunching in Luxury: Dining at Athens’ Acclaimed Grand Bretagne Hotel

On a rainy summer’s day in mid-August 2022, I embarked on a journey to explore a side of Athens that I had yet to experience. Having heard about the illustrious Hotel Grande Bretagne and its dominating presence in the city’s historical Syntagma Square, I made a reservation for lunch on my final day in Greece.

Stepping into the Hotel Grande Bretagne is like entering a time capsule filled with opulence and elegance.

Originally built in 1842 as a mansion for the wealthy Greek businessman Antonis Dimitriou, the hotel has since witnessed countless historical events that have shaped the very fabric of Greece.

As I made my way through the hotel’s exquisite interior, I couldn’t help but marvel at the seamless blend of classic charm and contemporary luxury that defines its atmosphere. The staff’s warm welcome and unwavering commitment to excellence further elevated the sense of grandeur that permeates every corner of this establishment.

Lamb, anyone?

As the main course arrived, I was presented with a beautifully plated dish of roast lamb, accompanied by a vibrant assortment of greens. The lamb, cooked to tender perfection, was a delightful testament to the culinary prowess of the hotel’s kitchen. Although the portion appeared modest at first glance, it proved to be surprisingly satisfying and expertly balanced.

Main course: Lamb with roast potato and greens (I would rate this 8.5/10)

Despite my overall enjoyment of the meal, I couldn’t help but notice that the service seemed to fall slightly short of the hotel’s elegant atmosphere. The waiting staff, while professional, exuded a certain coldness that felt at odds with the warm hospitality I had anticipated. This slight disconnect left me feeling somewhat underwhelmed, considering the Grande Bretagne’s reputation for excellence.

Dessert: Chocolate pastry (I would rate this 4/10)

A wet and grey summer day in Athens

Amidst the opulence and grandeur of the Grande Bretagne, an unsettling scene unfolded during my visit. A sudden and torrential downpour drenched the terrace area, leaving a young waiter to frantically clear the carefully arranged tables and escort customers seeking refuge inside.

Captured from my table, this photo showcases the scene as the drama unfolded before me.

This jarring moment served as a stark reminder of the relentless human effort required to maintain the hotel’s prestigious reputation, casting a bittersweet shadow over an otherwise luxurious dining experience.

While my lunch at the Hotel Grande Bretagne may not have been flawless, it remains an experience I treasure for its unique glimpse into Athens’ history and its enduring symbol of luxury and resilience. The hotel’s storied past, captivating ambiance, and exceptional cuisine ensure that it will continue to beckon discerning travelers, offering them a taste of Athens’ rich heritage and an opportunity to partake in its timeless allure.

Would I recommend dining at the Hotel Grande Bretagne in Athens?

While its historical charm and scenic views make it an enticing destination for first-time visitors, the service and culinary offerings may leave some guests desiring more from this iconic Athenian landmark.
