On a rainy summer’s day in mid-August 2022, I embarked on a journey to explore a side of Athens that I had yet to experience. Having heard about the illustrious Hotel Grande Bretagne and its dominating presence in the city’s historical Syntagma Square, I made a reservation for lunch on my final day in Greece.
Stepping into the Hotel Grande Bretagne is like entering a time capsule filled with opulence and elegance.
Originally built in 1842 as a mansion for the wealthy Greek businessman Antonis Dimitriou, the hotel has since witnessed countless historical events that have shaped the very fabric of Greece.

While my lunch at the Hotel Grande Bretagne may not have been flawless, it remains an experience I treasure for its unique glimpse into Athens’ history and its enduring symbol of luxury and resilience.
