Wahaca: A Foodie’s Verdict on London’s Bold Mexican Chain

Wahaca is a Mexican food chain with several dine-in restaurants across the country, most of which are concentrated in London, the UK’s capital. I have dined at this restaurant many times, particularly at their Central London locations, and twice at their Canary Wharf branch.

Here’s my straightforward, no-nonsense review of Wahaca, and spoiler alert: it’s good—you need to try it at least once.

Wahaca has a simple menu, with prices and ingredients listed clearly. Like almost all restaurants in the city, they have a gluten-free menu available upon request.

Your server will always, always (!) ask if you have any allergies as soon as you sit down. That would be a good time to mention any gluten or dairy intolerance, if applicable.

Their gluten-free menu reduces most options, but you can still have a very appetizing meal.

Service is usually quick, even during busy peak lunch hours. At least, that was the case for me when I dined at their Canary Wharf branch.

The Wahaca at Westfield White City has a much more beautiful and open seating area, with a semi-open outdoor seating place overlooking a prim promenade for shoppers.

What do I recommend at Wahaca?

The Sweet Potato & Feta Taquito, priced reasonably at 6.95 GBP, falls under their ‘platitos’ category but is actually filling enough on its own. The delicious sweet potato mash is perfectly complemented by the tangy feta, which is generously thrown across the hot taco (refer to the following photo). This delightful and warming combination is enveloped inside a toasted, crunchy taco. It’s a marriage of flavours. Vegetarians: this one has your name on it.

No visit of mine is complete without ordering the beef gringa tacos—a selection of 3 mini soft tacos, filled with melt-in-your-mouth beef seasoned in traditional Mexican flavors and topped with a tiny drizzle of salsa fresca. There’s more beef than any other topping in these tacos, but I’m not complaining. *There is no photo of the beef gringas I had because I finished it as soon as it arrived.

You can’t really go wrong with any dish here, in my opinion.

I’m slightly biased due to my love of Mexican cuisine. Anything they put in front of me gets wolfed down within 5 minutes.

I love their ‘fast-food’ service, which means you can scan a QR code on your table to pay your bill and leave without waiting for the paper bill to reach you. On busy evenings, I’d advise this approach to your meal as you could wait a while to get your bill and pay before leaving.

In Conclusion

In short, Wahaca—a commercialized British twist on the humbly flavorful Mexican street food—is a welcome dinner stop after a busy day in London. Their easy-to-use service and energetic staff will definitely leave you in a more nourished place!
